Debbie Kapetanopoulos

debbie posing on the harbor wall in Rockport
Recognized as a stand out swimmer at age 9, Debbi started her journey with Charles Stephanos at The New England Swim School. By age ten, she was breaking records at various levels, including my first National Age Group Record at twelve. Under Coach Stephanos, she competed in all strokes, achieving numerous local and regional titles, and eventually broke American National records in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

After retiring from swimming, she began coaching at the North Suburban YMCA, where she became the Head Coach of The New England All-Star Team and helped lead the New England Barracuda Senior Team to various championships, including Olympic titles. Now, at Manchester Athletic Club, Debbie utilizes her past skills and experiences to foster a supportive learning environment, optimizing one-on-one lesson time to benefit her students.

She started as a lifeguard and private swim instructor at the Manchester Athletic Club in 2017. For over eight years Lauryn has taught private and group swim lessons to children ages 0-12. Lauryn strives to create an individualized learning environment for each child as they learn how to navigate the water.

Catie O’Flynn

My name is Catie O’Flynn and I am a swim instructor at the MAC. I have been teaching swim lessons and Lifeguarding since summer 2006 and love it! In addition to teaching swim lessons, I am also a 3rd grade teacher. I became interested in teaching and working with children while teaching swim at the MAC as a teenager. I have a lot of fun doing lessons and incorporate games and encouraging words in each of my classes. I want to help my students feel comfortable in the water and love swimming as much as I do!

Jill Ortiz

Jill is the head lifeguard at the Manchester Athletic Club. She is also part of the front desk staff team. Recently retired after a successful career as a marine biologist, Jill has continued to expand her love of water by obtaining her American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification. She has a strong passion for swimming and teaching children and adults of all levels and abilities. Jill has over 10+ years of competitive swimming experience, and her favorite stroke is the Butterfly. As a current lifeguard, she puts special emphasis on safety and building confidence in the water. Her teaching style focuses on positive reinforcement, skill progression, and making the experience fun. The reasons to learn to swim are numerous; whether you are just beginning, want to try out for a swimming team, or would like to maintain fitness and flexibility, your lessons will be tailored to the goals you want to achieve.
