Sam Butts

Director of Fitness and Sports Performance Training

Sam graduated from Thornton Academy (Saco, ME) and St. Joseph’s College (SJC) of Maine (Standish, ME) with a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science (2009-2013). A 4-year Varsity hockey player and Travis Roy award finalist, he moved on to be a 4-year starter and captain of the SJC baseball team. Sam has over a decade of measurable success in sport performance training, yoga, and extensive knowledge and practice in health, wellness, and nutrition. He completed an internship with the vaunted Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning program where he worked with athletes at all levels. The Boyle program is regarded as the best strength and conditioning program in the country.

Sam has developed a lifelong passion for movement, sports and performance training through his own experiences as an athlete. He aspires to build this same passion in every athlete he works with and, as a coach, he hopes to have the same positive impact on others that so many of his coaches had on him.

Sam believes in building the basics and takes pride in consistently doing the common things uncommonly well. He focuses on creating an athletic foundation to support injury prevention and increased performance in sport. Most importantly, he hopes to instill self-confidence and build high-character individuals who appreciate and love the process of striving to get better each day- physically, mentally, and in every other way- through taking ownership of their own journey.

Tristen Howard

Sports Performance Coach, Personal Trainer

Tristen recently earned his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology while competing as a Student-Athlete on the Track and Field Team at the University of Rhode Island. He is a 2x consecutive Atlantic 10 (A10) Conference 100m Champion, has contributed to six consecutive A10 Conference Team Championships, and holds both the School and A10 Conference Records in the 60m dash. Additionally, he set a School Record and made an NCAA preliminary appearance with his 4x100m relay team in the 2024 Outdoor season.

Tristen knows firsthand the challenges of returning to play post-injury. Over five years, he has endured and recovered from 13 hamstring strains, and has not let that stop him. Since winning is the only option for him, he has taken an interest in many modalities to maximize recovery and rehabilitation.

With a particular interest in strength and conditioning and athletic performance, Tristen interned at Mike Boyle’s Strength and Conditioning (MBSC), working with Coach Sam and Coach Alex. During Spring ‘24, he also interned at the University of Rhode Island’s Strength and Conditioning facility with Coach Collin, where he was able to merge his knowledge between the private and collegiate sectors.

Collin Engley

Collin Engley

Sports Performance Coach, Personal Trainer

Collin is a graduate (‘24) of the University of Rhode Island’s kinesiology program. Diving into the strength and conditioning industry from day 1 of his collegiate career, Collin completed an internship at Full Plate S&C in his hometown of Westfield, Massachusetts during his first semester that was prematurely ended by COVID. From there, Collin obtained his NSCA Certification in Personal Training in order to further develop his coaching abilities and help people in the URI community along their fitness journeys. After a year of this pursuit, Collin was awarded an additional ISSA CPT scholarship and later promoted to become URI Recreation Department’s Personal Training Program Assistant, the highest position an undergraduate is able to hold within the department.

Collin’s primary interest is in long term athletic development stemming from his interest in athletics from a young age in an unorthodox order, starting with weightlifting pursuits in middle school and joining local lacrosse, wrestling and basketball teams for the first time in high school. Collin’s philosophy is that of creating competent and confident movers from a young age so that athletes can be creative, be themselves and express control on and off the field or court.
